BAKEWELL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

The Royal British Legion has been helping serving and ex-serving armed forces personnel and their families for 100 years. Their ethos is that no-one should suffer for having served others and their organisation works tirelessly to deliver a wide set of measures to provide practical and emotional support for families and individuals affected by the hardship of war and conflict. Founded in 1921, the ranks of the British Legion has grown to 2,500 branches across the UK and oversees.

Bakewell rose to this commemoration and on Saturday, 11th September, held an event on Bakewell Recreation Ground to mark this historic anniversary.

Crowds gathered to enjoy the various stalls, and a service and wreath laying was held at 10.00am with Canon Tony in attendance. The Yorkshire Regimental Band brought us music with pipes and drums and standard bearers.

An additional attraction was the presence of Mr Charles Hanson from Antiques Road Show and Bargain Hunt who held an auction and also conducted valuations for people.

Huge thanks go to Mark Wakeman for all his hard work supporting and organising fundraising events for the Royal British Legion.

Testimony to this was Mark's recent Beacon of Hope Award, presented to him by Councillor Alasdair Sutton on behalf of Derbyshire County Council. This award reflects Mark's dedicated service to the people of Derbyshire during the Pandemic.
