Tenkara Fly fishing.

There has been a lot of interest shown in Tenkara fishing here in Derbyshire and several anglers have purchased outfits online.

In the interests of our customer we have hung back from getting involved in what seemed to be at first a passing and cultish fad, until that is we have had a little go at it in the real world.

With a 13 ft odd telescopic roach pole thingy. And a little red thing described as a “Lilian” to attached a huge seeming  furled leader and a tippet of around 4ft long I must admit to feeling a bit of a burk on my first couple of sessions.

What a revelation though! Testing it out on the Black barn stretch of the Wye I raised well over a dozen fish to the new outfit.

Normally I think I am doing to get half that number of takes on conventional outfits on this stretch.

Admittedly I did not make firm contact with many of the fish I raised, but the amount of drag free drift was enough to bring a smile to the most severe of critics I would have thought.

Using this outfit seems to concentrate the attention on fishable water and not on heroic casting to the far bank.

It will not replace a decent rod and line combo for big fish and  big flies in a wind, it is however a lot of  fun for the reasonably switched on angler, takes up little room, and is not hugely expensive.

The only major worry is, as a casting instructor it may put me out of a job!

Bakewell Fly fishing shop is pleased to announce that Tenkara style rods and fly lines are now available in store, and a demonstration outfit is available.

This web site is not currently a selling site , if you would like more information about tackle in general, Tenkara, local fishing give the shop a call . Even if the shop is unmanned or busy, we usually have a short prospects update on the answer phone.
